Eco

Welcome to The Hills Lower School Eco Blog.

This is Eco, the schools environmental mascot.  Eco is found all over the school, he is always there to remind the pupils and teachers that it is everyone’s responsibility to look after our environment and the wider ecology.  You will find him near taps, light switches, paper towel dispensers, computers and doors.

In the Eco Blog you will find all the latest news on the school, its grounds, environmental projects and eco-friendly schemes such as monitoring the electricity usage, litter, recycling and the new Bio Dome.

The Eco Blog is written by Miss Welch; Miss Welch has been maintaining the school environment for the past 4 years as a volunteer and has been employed since September 2010 as our Environmental Teaching Assistant.

Thanks to the many families that attended our 1st, very successful, family seed swap and sustainable craft workshop on Saturday, March 24th!  Everyone had an amazing time sharing and swapping a huge variety of seeds. The children played environmental games with their families and friends and made lovely sustainable ‘green’ crafts for their own garden:  bird seed balls and bird feeders from recycled drink bottles. We will be running other exciting environmental workshops for families later in the year, so please watch this space!

Our Fort

This year local artist Andy Buffham came into school to repaint Our Fort. The children were asked what they would like to see on the fort and were given the chance to sketch out some of their designs. These were given to Andy who used them as a base for his work. I think you will agree that the children have a fantastic imagination. Thank you Andy for a great addition to our school.

Kitchen Garden

Over the Easter break the area beside the school kitchen entrance was transformed from an area of waste ground to a new kitchen garden. We all know how hard Alicia works in the kitchen cooking our lunches so we decided to surprise her with an outdoor area of her own. There is now a herb garden and a small vegetable patch where we have planted some tomato plants. A few old tyres have been planted with other herbs and a lavender bush. With a bench to relax on at the end of a busy day the garden is finished.

Pride in Bedford Bulb Planting

Pride in Bedford invited our school to take part in a bulb planting session on the local green space "Chiltern Green". 4H put on their wellies and spent the morning digging and planting daffodil bulbs. Over 100 bulbs were planted and have since flowered. Take a look at the photos to see how well the children did!

Park Ranger Day

We were very lucky at school this week to have a visit from Priory Country Park Ranger Jane. She taught us how to make insect houses from elder, a wood that is found on our school grounds. We have placed lots of them around the environmental area for the ladybirds and lacewings that visit our garden. We want to encourage them into our gardens as they are a natural way of controlling the aphids that weaken our plants. We also began creating a new "Bug Palace" for our environmental area. We hope that it will be inhabited with many insects for us to look at soon.

Pledge Tree

To celebrate Green Britain Day every child in the school made an ‘Eco Pledge’ leaf. We looked at small differences we could all make to help us be more environmentally friendly. Here are a few examples of our pledges. I will try to use both sides of the paper   by Maia 2L I pledge to save water by using a water butt to catch rainwater   by Tamara 3M I pledge to put all my garden rubbish in the compost bin   by Hannah 4H
