Science and Environment Week March 18 to 22nd 2013 Featured
All the children in the school have participated in a number of exciting and educational Science and Environmental learning activities. Priory Country Park Ranger Jane visited each class to teach them about nectar producing plants and trees in our area. We have a much better understanding of how important it is to take care of the habitats where nectar drinking insects like butterflies and bees live. Everyone made a nectar feeder for their own garden out of recycled materials like old CDs and plastic sacks - they are beautiful!
Years 1 and 2 will hear an Electrical Safety talk by an EDF educational speaker this week. Bedford Borough's FLYNN the BIN will talk about ways we can get involved in 'recycling, re-using and reducing'at school and home to make our planet GREENER!!
A group of Keystage 2 children will walk to the Putnoe green near our school for a BIG TIDY litter pick of this area to keep it litter free and beautiful for our community!
On Wednesday afternoon years 1 and 2 will partner with a child in years 3 and 4 for a collaborative science investigation. All of us will gather together at the end of the day to share our work in a whole school assembly! Remember to turn off your lights for an hour on WORLD EARTH HOUR - March 23rd at 8:30 p.m. - it will save our planet lots of energy and remind everyone how important it is to turn off lights and switches that are not in use! Eco, our school environmental mascot says: 'GO, GO, GREEN!!'
If any grown ups want to volunteer to help a class with gardening activities for half a day each week, please come by and see Mrs. Humphreys for more information (training is provided, FREE!). Many thanks.

WONDERFUL WELLIES Non-Uniform Day a SPECTACULAR SUCCESS!
The Eco Committee organised a very successful 'Wonderful Wellies' non-uniform day on Thursday the 28th of June.
Thank you everyone for donating over 110 pairs of 'wonderful wellies'. The wellies will be used by all our children to allow them to get out and enjoy outdoor learning all year round!
Thank you to the PTA - they have generously donated the money to buy a couple of wellie stands for the school.

Science and Environmental Area Putnoe Library Display
Drop by Putnoe library over the Easter break with your family and friends and see our beautiful display of photos.
The photos celebrate the array of gorgeous flowers in bloom around our school grounds. And if you look carefully you can spot the frogs and frog spawn in the pond. We've even managed to capture a colourful photo of the pair of ducks that return to our pond every Spring for a relaxing paddle - like our children, they love being outdoors at The Hills!

Let the Wind Blow Free! Wind turbine workshops
During Science Week, our Year 3 pupils were treated to an exciting and educational workshop to build a wind turbine.
Nick Barlow (Gabriel's uncle 4H) is an engineer that designs wind turbines. Mr. Barlow and Gabriel's mum, Mrs. Fallono, helped us learn how wind turbines use the natural power of the wind to make electricity. The children worked in teams to design blades of different sizes and shapes to test. We went outside to see if the blades they designed would spin in the wind... and, they did! It was an amazing experience. Now we want a wind turbine for The Hills - to make our own 'green' energy!

Science and Environmental Club make recycling signs.
This week the Science and Environment club are making recycling signs to place around the school. This will remind eveyone to REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE.
From Monday 24th January there will be boxes outside the ICT suite to collect used batteries, old ink cartridges, comics and magazines and any old greeting cards. The batteries and ink cartridges will be recycled and delivered to Barkers Lane recycling centre - we're very keen to keep to all our batteries out of the landfill sites! The old magazines and greetings cards will be recycled by the children and used in craft making activities across the school.
The children say ... remember to GO GREEN!
