Life below stairs

Written by
It is 1891. Queen Victoria has just become Empress of India. Over the last few years, Lady Annaly has restored the ruins of Holdenby Palace to the Holdenby House we know today. Now she is hiring servants to run the household. We were under the strict supervision of: Mrs Bumbridge, the fierce housekeeper, who will tell you precisely what she expects Mrs Crumpet, the cook, who will teach you how to make preserves and pickles Wilkins, the parlourmaid, who will instruct you in their painstaking duties The children from the workhouse (The Hills Lower School) were allocated servants' jobs and must undertake their work with diligence: ONLY PERFECTION IS GOOD ENOUGH. They worked in the kitchen and in the laundry room. We were taken around the house, where they were told their conditions of service and taught their manners In the afternoon, the children were presented to her Ladyship.  Then Casey Stewart and Joshua Stewart were lucky to be picked for the servant jobs at Holdenby Hall. We were required to entertain her ladyship singing  ‘Oh I do like to be beside the seaside’, which we discovered was her favourite song! Her ladyship then surprised us by revealing herself as Ruby Green’s Mum!  At the end of the day we had time to ask some questions about Victorian Life.
